About The Speaker
Low Ewe Jin
I grew up and schooled in Malaysia in the 70’s and went to university in England in the 80’s. I have been an architect in practice for more than 30 years, working in England, Malaysia and Melbourne, for the last 5 years based in Bali and more directed in the field of sustainable design. It was in Bali that I become more immersed in bamboo working as Lead Architect at Ibuku for 4 years. I have also been presenting talks and holding workshops at BambooU Bali since 2016 and facilitating design and build courses in bamboo. In June 2018, I went back to working on my own projects this time using bamboo together with other matching materials. While I am happy to produce buildings of full bamboo I also enjoy looking for ways to fuse bamboo into buildings and combining it well with other recycled or repurposed materials where appropriate. At this stage of my life, after many years of giving a large part of it to full time conventional practice, I am on a path learning to take my time to select projects and enjoy the creative process – and part of the journey is not just to keep learning but to give back with what I have been blessed with. One of my plans for 2019 is to be more nomadic and be able to travel, locate and work preferably to interesting destinations where the projects bring me.
