Dr. Barbara Imhof

Dr. Barbara Imhof is an internationally acclaimed space architect, design researcher and educator. She is the co-founder and CEO of LIQUIFER Systems Group, an interdisciplinary team comprising engineers, architects, designers and scientists. Her works involves spaceflight parameters such as living with limited resources, minimal and transformable spaces, resource-conserving systems; all aspects imperative to sustainability. Barbara lectures at various universities, such as the ETH Zurich, Chalmers University, Gothenburg, University of Applied Arts, Vienna and Vienna University of Technology (VUT). She received her education in Architecture at the VUT, Vienna, The Bartlett School, London, Southern California Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles, and she graduated from the University of Applied Arts in the studio of Wolf Prix. Barbara Imhof has a Master of Science from the International Space University, Strasbourg, and received her doctorate from the Vienna University of Technology. As project lead Barbara currently works on the Gateway project, designing the habitat module for the next International Space Station in a lunar orbit. She also led projects such as SHEE, a Self-deployable Habitat for Extreme Environments, the first built European simulation habitat. The SHEE habitat became part of another LIQUIFER project named MOONWALK, developed to test human-robot collaborations in two space simulation missions in Rio Tinto and subsea. Another most recent project she led for LIQUIFER was RegoLight, advancing the Additive Layer Manufacturing technology of solar sintering to build ISRU habitats on the moon. In addition, Barbara pursues projects in the field of biomimetics and closed-loop systems such as Living Architecture - in collaboration with Rachel Armstrong – and GrAB–Growing As Building which looks at growth principles in nature and their proto- architectural translations towards self-growing buildings. LIQUIFER’s partners and clients belong to internationally renowned institutions and space agencies. Since nearly 20 years Barbara Imhof has been teaching at various prestigious universities, such as the ETH Zurich, Chalmers University, Gothenburg, University of Applied Arts, Vienna and Vienna University of Technology (VUT). She received her education in architecture at the VUT, the Bartlett School, London, SCI-ARC, Los Angeles, and she graduated from the University of Applied Arts in the studio of Wolf Prix. Barbara Imhof has a Master of Science from the International Space University, Strasbourg, and received her doctorate from the Vienna University of Technology. From 2015 to 2018 she served on the board of directors for Women in Aerospace, since 2016 as Executive Board member. Barbara Imhof has received a nomination for the Austrian of the Year 2016 in the category research, 2012 the Austrian Fem-Tech award for March, and 2011 the Polarstern Award of the Austrian Space Forum for space outreach activities.
