Ar. Michael Ong

Michael began his architectural journey as a graduate architect in BYG in 1996 and in 2004 went on to become one of the key partners that help established BYG Group which is today a leading consulting firm that offers Architectural, Town Planning and Project Management services under one roof. As an Architect, Urban Planner and Registered Conservator with the National Heritage Department, he is personally involved in the conceptualizing and design development of many of the firm’s projects both locally and regionally. Some of the notable projects by BYG include 23 Love Lane (PAM Gold Award), Setia SPICE Convention Center (FIABCI Malaysia Prix d’Excellence Gold Award and MIP-Thinkcity Placemaking Gold Award), Gurney Paragon (FIABCI World Prix D’Excellence Silver Award), Design Village Penang Outlet Mall (PAM Silver Award), Celadon Sports and Resort Club (PAM Silver Award), Spices Boutique Hotel (PAM Commendation Award) and Baby BIDs -revitalization of Jalan Gurdwara (MIP Placemaking Gold Award). He has been a state-appointed member of the Technical Review Panel that oversee the approval of development within George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010. As an active member of Malaysian Institute of Planners, he helmed the post of Chairman in the Northern Branch for four consecutive years. In the field of academics, Michael has been a Studio Master for the Masters of Architecture programme in USM since 2018. Leading the way in Urban Rehabilitation of George Town with iconic projects such as Sia Boey Urban Archeological Park which recently won Special Mention in the Edge Malaysia-PAM Green Excellence Award in 2020, Baby BIDs and Penang Art District, he has been actively collaborating with the Penang City Council to “green” the city streets and backlanes as well as repurposing traditional shop house typologies into contemporary co-working and co-living spaces such as “Forward School” in an effort to re-populate and revitalize the Innercity of George Town. In 2011 he was named “30 under 40” Emerging Architects in Malaysia by PAM. His works had been published in local as well as international media such as Architecture Malaysia, Space, Habitat, Home Concepts, Room, Architecture@13, Malaysian Tatler, D +A, Senses of Malaysia, Millionaire Asia, The Edge, The Malay Mail and The Star. One of his earlier works on adaptive reuse, Brittany House was featured in the recently published Terrace Transformations in the Tropics.
