About The Speaker
Ar. Fabian Tan
Fabian Tan is the principal of Fabian Tan Architect (FTA), an architectural practice in Kuala Lumpur specialising in unique residential designs. He graduated with Honours from the University of South Australia in 1997 where he received his Bachelor of Architecture. He has previously worked in Kuala Lumpur & Melbourne, handling a wide range of developments that include residential, institutional, commercial and interior projects. Fabian explores creativity beyond architecture, dabbling in the creation of art pieces, furniture and installations which have been featured in art exhibitions. Since the establishment of FTA in 2012, his firms’ works have garnered positive attention from local and international media. Most notable publications include Archdaily, Dezeen, Domus, Habitusliving, Design Anthology, Architecture Malaysia, Malaysia Tatler, The Star Newspaper, The Edge and others. Recently, the firm was featured as one of the twenty emerging architectural practices in the Wallpaper* Architects’ Directory 2021, celebrating the magazine’s 25th Anniversary Issue. Fabian’s approach to design has been one that involves evolution and flexibility. Ideas that are formed in the conception of a project never imposes anything on the site. Throughout, conventions are constantly reassessed, resulting in individual variations of concepts meant for a specific context. He believes that the essence and consistency of a space is a whole that reflects its constituent parts such as light, material, volume, and relationships. In this hectic and overly complicated times we exist in, restraint and refinement serve as his guiding philosophy to create spaces of subtle beauty.
