9 March, Saturday: Chinatown Cultural walk
Our walking trail on 9 March was an exploration to Downtown KL heritage and culture by visiting various shop owners from 3rd generation tea merchants, stationary and gift shop owners since pre-independence and several old cafes managed by second generation owners who welcomed us into their premise.
Jane Rai our tour guide shared delightful stories about the only Sikh police station, the Gurdwara Sahib Polis since 1898 located on Jalan Tun H.S Lee.
The starting point for our group was Jann at Four Points Sheraton located on level 7. It has a verandah with a panoramic view of the bustling district of Jalan Petaling and Jalan Balai Polis and a stunning city skyline Although it was a hot Saturday morning we enjoyed storytelling session about the insights of the early settlers around this old part of the city. We ended our walk at Kafe Dian, Jalan Panggung, a 109 year old Pos Malaysia Office at one time abandoned but found new life as an old-style Café serving delicious traditional nasi lemak, prawn noodle and other pork free Hainanese dishes.
